Zelensky Rejects Putin’s Proposal for a May 9 Ceasefire

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticized Vladimir Putin’s proposed three-day ceasefire for May 9, insisting instead on a 30-day truce.

While speaking with journalists, Zelensky stated he "does not want to play along with the short ceasefires proposed by Putin." According to him, a 30-day ceasefire is the most effective model, as it is impossible to reach any meaningful agreements in just a few days.

“An unconditional ceasefire is the model proposed by the Americans. Yes, let’s try it for 30 days. Why a 30-day ceasefire? Because in three, five, or seven days it’s impossible to agree on anything,” Zelensky said.

He also added that Ukraine cannot guarantee the safety of world leaders in Moscow on May 9.

“To create a soft environment for Putin to emerge from isolation on May 9, and to make things comfortable and safe—for those leaders, or friends, or partners of Putin who come for whatever reason to Red Square on May 9—no one is going to help Putin,” he emphasized.

Zelensky stressed that Russia must clearly show it is ready to talk about a genuine ceasefire.

“The point is they kill you until the 7th, then give themselves a comfortable two or three days, and then on the 11th they attack us with missiles again. I just don’t see this as any kind of real offer,” the president explained.

He also noted that if a 30-day ceasefire were accepted, the issue of monitoring would need to be resolved quickly.

Vladimir Putin announced the ceasefire to mark the 80th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany. According to his decision, from 00:00 on May 7 to 00:00 on May 11, Russia will observe a ceasefire. Moscow has threatened Ukraine that if it refuses to join the ceasefire, there will be an “effective response.”
