U.S. Congress Approves Tax and Government Spending Bill

The U.S. Congress has passed a tax and government spending bill proposed by President Donald Trump. The House of Representatives approved the legislation by a narrow margin: 218–214.

The bill includes increased defense spending, funding for mass deportations of migrants, and the extension of tax breaks totaling $4.5 trillion. It also calls for deep cuts to social programs, including federal food assistance and Medicaid—the government health insurance program for low-income individuals. According to some estimates, up to 12 million Americans could lose their coverage. Despite protests from Democrats and concerns among moderate Republicans, House Speaker Mike Johnson managed to secure the bill’s passage through negotiations with lawmakers and Trump’s personal involvement.

The spending is partially funded by eliminating subsidies for clean energy and electric vehicles. This led to a public conflict between Trump and Elon Musk, once a presidential ally. Musk called the subsidy cuts “a blow to the future” and sharply criticized the White House on social media, saying the bill’s passage would lead to a sharp increase in the U.S. national debt.

Trump declared the bill “one of the most significant in history.”
