Donald Trump has become the first living U.S. president in 100 years whose portrait has appeared on American currency. On Wednesday, the U.S. Mint issued a collectible one-dollar coin featuring Trump.

The coin, bearing Trump’s face and the words “Liberty” and “In God We Trust,” commemorates the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The Mint put a set of 25 coins on sale for $61, while a bag containing 100 coins was priced at $154.50. Just a few hours after the release, the Mint’s website displayed a message saying that the coins were “currently unavailable.”

The Mint explained that the Trump coin was issued as part of the “celebration of this historic milestone” and was intended to be an “outstanding addition to modern collections.”

In addition to the website, the coins are being sold through Mint vending machines in Washington, D.C.

They look like gold, but do not actually contain any gold. The alloy from which they are minted consists of 88.5% copper, with the remainder made up of zinc, manganese, and nickel.

In May this year, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that his department planned to issue a $250 banknote featuring Donald Trump’s portrait to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States.

U.S. federal law prohibits placing images of living people on U.S. currency. Trump’s supporters introduced a bill in Congress seeking an exception for the current president, but the legislation has not yet been passed.
