The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has approved Mykhailo Fedorov as Minister of Defense

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has approved Mykhailo Fedorov for the position of Minister of Defense, according to RBC Ukraine.

Fedorov’s candidacy was supported by 277 deputies. The vote on Mykhailo Fedorov’s candidacy was held a second time, as he did not receive enough votes in the first round.

Among other things, Fedorov plans to conduct a comprehensive audit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and find additional ways to support military personnel. According to him, all measures will be public.

He also plans a “comprehensive solution” to the issue of recruitment offices to address problems that have accumulated over the years and ensure that Ukraine’s defense capability is not compromised.

According to Fedorov, Ukrainian forces will increasingly use modern technologies, including systems based on artificial intelligence.

Mykhailo Fedorov is 34 years old. In 2023, the Verkhovna Rada approved him as Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine for Innovation, Education Development, Science, and Technology. He also served as Minister of Digital Technology.

In 2025, after Yulia Svyrydenko was approved as Prime Minister, Fedorov retained his position in the new cabinet of ministers. He was later appointed First Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine.

Since the beginning of 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has carried out several personnel changes. Kirill Budanov was appointed head of the President’s Office, replacing Andriy Yermak, with Sergey Kyslytsia becoming his first deputy. Denys Shmyhal, who previously served as Minister of Defense, was appointed Minister of Energy. Additionally, Zelensky replaced several regional leaders.
