The U.S. sends Marines and warships to the Middle East

The Pentagon is additionally deploying Marines and warships to the Middle East amid Iran’s tightening blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing three U.S. officials.

It is reported that U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth approved the corresponding request from United States Central Command, which is responsible for American forces in the region. The plan involves deploying a landing group unit and an expeditionary force. Such a formation typically includes about 5,000 Marines and sailors, as well as several ships.

According to two officials, the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli, based in Japan, and the Marines aboard it are currently heading to the Middle East. Sources also noted that some of the Marines are already in the region.

“While this move indicates a significant increase in troop numbers in the region, it does not necessarily mean that a ground operation is inevitable or will take place at all,” Associated Press reports. It is noted that Marine expeditionary units are capable not only of conducting amphibious operations but also of ensuring the security of embassies and civilians, as well as assisting in disaster relief.

However, a source from Axios states that the request from U.S. Central Command was made specifically to “expand the capabilities for conducting military operations against Iran.” According to the source, in addition to additional Marine units and the USS Tripoli, other warships as well as F-35 Lightning II fighter jets will also arrive in the Middle East.
