Russia Issues First Sentence for Voluntarily Surrendering to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Junior Sergeant Roman Ivanishin Gets 15 Years in Prison

The Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Garrison Military Court sentenced Roman Ivanishin, a resident of Sakhalin, to 15 years in a high-security penal colony. He was found guilty under charges related to surrendering to the enemy, attempting to surrender again, and desertion. By court decision, Ivanishin was stripped of his military rank of junior sergeant. Ivanishin did not plead guilty.
Roman Ivanishin is a mining foreman from Sakhalin. He ended up in the army through mobilization and served in the 39th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade in the Donetsk region of Ukraine. Ivanishin was captured by Ukrainian forces on June 10, 2023, near the village of Stepnoye, close to Volnovakha. He himself told the story in a video shared online, as reported by Kommersant. In that same video, Ivanishin spoke out against the war and urged other Russian soldiers to flee their units.
Ivanishin returned to Russia in January 2024 as part of a group of 248 Russian servicemen who were exchanged for captured Ukrainians. Upon returning, Ivanishin came under investigation. Initially, the military court in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk refused to handle his case and forwarded the materials to Moscow, but they were eventually returned to the Russian Far East.
