A wall collapses onto a train in Spain: the driver killed
Just two days after a major railway disaster in southern Spain that claimed at least 42 lives, another fatal rail accident occurred in the country. One person was killed and five others were seriously injured after a retaining wall collapsed onto a commuter train car, Catalonia’s fire service spokesperson Claudi Gallardo reported on Tuesday evening, January 20. The tragedy happened near the town of Lleida, about 40 kilometers west of Barcelona.
According to the Catalan commuter train operator Rodalies de Catalunya, the victim was an employee of the company. The EFE news agency уточняет that it was the train driver.
The cause of the accident was a powerful storm that caused a large wall to collapse directly onto the tracks at the moment the train was passing. Most of the injured passengers were in the first car, which was struck by the falling section of the wall.
Emergency services reported that assistance was provided to 37 injured people, most of whom sustained minor injuries. One passenger had to be rescued from a crushed railcar.
Two days earlier, on the evening of January 18, 42 people were killed in a collision between two high-speed trains in the southern Spanish province of Córdoba. Thirty-seven people remain hospitalized. An Iryo train traveling from Málaga to Madrid derailed and moved onto a neighboring track, where it collided with an oncoming train heading for Huelva.
