Speaker of the Georgian Parliament: We applied to join the European Union, not to return to the Soviet Union — Soviet Moscow must not be replaced by Soviet Brussels

“We applied to join the European Union, not to return to the Soviet Union, and our efforts are aimed precisely at ensuring that the European Union does not deviate from the European path, which it is currently moving away from. And when the moment of our accession to the EU comes, we should not find the Soviet Union there,” said the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili.

According to him, Brussels must change its course, as the current course is leading the European Union toward catastrophe.

“In the European Parliament, several hundred people gather, discuss various issues and do not even delve into their content, not thinking that by pressing a button they may decide the fate of nations. This is precisely the civilizational gap toward which Brussels is currently pushing the European Union. It is a situation where not only the fate of the EU, but also the fate of other nations and countries is in the hands of irresponsible and unqualified people. The very same people, the same faces, press the button to adopt anti-Georgian hostile resolutions without even understanding their content; sometimes they declare Mikheil Saakashvili a political prisoner, at other times they make other accusations.

Therefore, this is a bitter lesson we have learned in recent years: today, unfortunately, the European Union is in the hands of forces that are turning it into the Soviet Union. We applied to join the European Union, not to return to the Soviet Union, and our efforts are aimed precisely at ensuring that the EU does not deviate from the European path, which it is currently moving away from, and that when the moment of our accession comes we will not encounter the Soviet Union there, and that Soviet Moscow will not be replaced in substance by Soviet Brussels. Therefore, Brussels must change its course — this course is leading the European Union itself toward catastrophe. This can be seen both in the economy and in the sphere of security. An organization created as a project of peace is today speaking about being armed with nuclear weapons. This in itself shows the challenges this organization is facing. Until this course is changed by Brussels, it will of course be difficult for us to find common ground with the leadership of an organization moving toward a Soviet future,” Papuashvili said.
