Irakli Kobakhidze: The double standards the EU demonstrates toward Georgia are an extremely shameful fact

The double standards that the European Union demonstrates toward Georgia are a shameful fact, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists.

As the head of government noted, the European bureaucracy is directly demanding that Georgia join the sanctions.

“What is happening is a clear demonstration of everything we have been talking about. The European bureaucracy is already directly demanding accession to the sanctions: previously they avoided discussing this issue as much as possible, then subtly introduced it through a resolution of the European Parliament, and now the executive branch is also demanding accession to the sanctions. I would like to remind you that back in 2022 we carried out a simple calculation and saw that joining the sanctions would have caused at least a 10 percent decline in our economy.

Naturally, there was no expediency in this, and therefore we made a decision in line with national interests.

Later, even the radical opposition distanced itself from this demand. They claimed that they had never called for joining the sanctions. In reality, different processes were taking place, and now the EU’s executive branch is directly demanding accession to the sanctions. I would also like to remind you that no one from the European bureaucracy has ever put forward similar demands, for example, toward Moldova, Armenia, or any other country. Here again, double standards are evident — and here Ms. Kallas will no longer be able to say that Moldova does not seek EU membership.

Double standards are present everywhere: there are prime ministers of certain countries who can fly from Europe to Moscow. We have nothing against this — it is the business of the respective countries — but what is bad is precisely the existence of double standards, which we see on the part of the European bureaucracy. In one case, one thing may be considered acceptable, while in another case a situation ten times less significant may trigger a sharply negative reaction. The double standards that the European Union demonstrates toward Georgia are shameful,” Irakli Kobakhidze stated.
