Part of a Dilapidated Building Collapses in Tbilisi: Two People Killed

On July 14, part of a residential building collapsed in Tbilisi, near the Vokzalnaya Square metro station. Rescue workers recovered the bodies of two victims from the rubble. One injured person—a 49-year-old woman with multiple injuries—was taken to a clinic.
The search and rescue operation at the scene lasted several hours.
Minister of Internal Affairs Gela Geladze and Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze arrived at the site. According to the mayor, the building had been deemed structurally unsafe, assigned the fifth category of damage, and was not subject to restoration.
Kaladze stated that city authorities had repeatedly met with residents and offered them participation in a housing replacement program, which would have allowed the building to be demolished and a new one constructed. However, he said, reaching an agreement with all residents had not been possible.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs announced that an investigation had been launched under Article 240 of the Criminal Code—violation of safety rules during construction or other works.
