One Person Arrested in Tbilisi on Charges of Fraudulently Obtaining a Large Sum of Money and Manufacturing and Using Forged Documents
Officers from the Fraud Investigation Division of the Main Investigative Department of the Tbilisi Police Department and the Main Division of Detectives of Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs have arrested a previously convicted individual on charges of repeatedly obtaining large sums of money through fraud and manufacturing and using forged documents. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia reported the arrest.
“The investigation established that two citizens approached the accused seeking assistance with a civil dispute and related legal services. The accused demanded a large sum of money from them, promising to file a lawsuit with the court, pay the state fee, and achieve the desired legal outcome.
Despite receiving the money, the accused, who was acting as a lawyer representing their interests, did not file a lawsuit with the court. Instead, he misled the citizens, convincing them that legal proceedings based on their claim were underway and had concluded in their favour. To substantiate his claims, he sent them forged documents.
According to the investigation, through these criminal acts, the accused fraudulently obtained 21,000 Georgian lari belonging to the victims.
Law enforcement officers arrested the accused pursuant to a judge’s order.
The investigation is being conducted under Articles 180 and 362 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which carry a prison sentence of up to nine years,” the statement said.
