Irakli Kobakhidze: The Development of Transport Infrastructure Is One of Our Top Priorities; USD 7 Billion Will Be Invested in Transport Infrastructure by 2032
“Today, as transport routes are changing and interest in the Middle Corridor is growing, the role of railways is becoming even more significant. A modernized, state-of-the-art and well-functioning railway system gives Georgia an opportunity to further strengthen its position as a transit hub,” Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said while addressing an event dedicated to Railway Workers’ Day.
According to the head of government, a total of USD 7 billion will be invested in transport infrastructure by 2032.
“Congratulations on this special day! I am pleased that our tradition continues and that we are once again gathering to celebrate this wonderful and remarkable occasion.
The history of Georgian Railway spans 154 years. It began in 1872, when the first train departed from Poti for Tbilisi. Since then, for more than a century and a half, the railway has remained an integral part of our country’s economic development and one of Georgia’s main transport arteries.
Today, as transport routes are changing and interest in the Middle Corridor is growing, the role of railways is becoming even more significant.
A modernized, state-of-the-art and well-functioning railway system gives Georgia an opportunity to further strengthen its position in transit transportation. The development of transport infrastructure is one of our top priorities.
Over the coming years, by 2032, a total of USD 7 billion will be invested in transport infrastructure. Alongside ports, highways and airports, one of the most important components of this plan is the modernization and strengthening of the railway network.
At the end of last year, the historic modernization of Georgia’s main railway line was completed, doubling its capacity and significantly reducing freight transportation time. We have also completed the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars project, and this railway section has begun full-scale operations,” the Georgian Prime Minister noted.
