In connection with the Day of the Restoration of the Autocephaly of the Georgian Orthodox Church, a prayer service is being held at the Sioni Church

At the Sioni Church of the Patriarchate of the Georgian Orthodox Church, a concluding prayer service is being held in honor of the Day of the Restoration of Autocephaly. The service is led by the Patriarchal Throne’s presiding bishop, Shio.

Afterwards, Bishop Shio, together with the archbishops and clergy, will conduct a requiem for the souls of all the Catholicos-Patriarchs of Georgia.

March 25 is celebrated as the Day of the Restoration of the Autocephaly of the Georgian Orthodox Church.

The Russian Empire abolished the autocephaly of the Georgian Orthodox Church in 1811. The Georgian Church restored it on March 25, 1917. Its independence was recognized by all Orthodox Churches, although there was no written confirmation at the time.

Thanks to the efforts of the Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia Ilia II, the Ecumenical Patriarchate officially recognized the autocephaly of the Georgian Church in 1990.
