Fines for traffic violations in Georgia increased from May 1
From today, legislative amendments developed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia have come into force. The main goal of these changes is to ensure more effective enforcement of traffic rules and to prevent road traffic accidents. This was reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia.
“In the context of a significantly increased number of vehicles in recent years and growing mobility, road safety remains a challenge — despite progress achieved, hundreds of people in Georgia die or suffer serious injuries in road accidents every year. In 2025 alone, 469 people were killed in traffic accidents in the country, while 8,191 people were injured.
The tightening of sanctions is based on a comprehensive analysis of the causes of road accidents and the high mortality rate on Georgia’s roads.
According to the legislative package, fines for certain violations have been increased, in particular: 👇
• The fine for violating vehicle maneuvering rules on the road has been increased to 100 GEL. At the same time, this violation results in a 20-point deduction from the driver’s license points.
• The fine for exceeding the speed limit by more than 15 km/h but not more than 40 km/h has been increased from 50 to 100 GEL.
• The fine for not using a seatbelt by the driver or passenger while driving has been increased to 50 GEL. This violation also results in a 10-point deduction from the driver’s license points.
• The fine for using a mobile phone while driving has been increased to 50 GEL.
• For violations of stopping and parking rules in cities such as Kutaisi, Batumi, Mtskheta, Rustavi, Gori, Telavi, Poti, Zugdidi, Akhaltsikhe, Ozurgeti, and Georgian resort areas, as well as for vehicles of categories M3, N2, N3, or T, the fine has been increased to 50 GEL, as in Tbilisi.
• Drifting that causes minor damage to property or harm to a person will be punished with a 500 GEL fine and suspension of the right to drive for 6 months. A repeated violation that causes a dangerous situation or traffic congestion will result in a 300 GEL fine and a 30-point deduction from the driver’s license.
• A 500 GEL fine is introduced for driving category N2 and/or N3 vehicles on public roads in Tbilisi if the destination of freight transport is not Tbilisi.
• A new violation has been defined: stopping or parking on sidewalks or pedestrian crossings, which will result in a 100 GEL fine in Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Batumi, Mtskheta, Rustavi, Gori, Telavi, Poti, Zugdidi, Akhaltsikhe, Ozurgeti, and resort areas, and a 10 GEL fine in other municipalities.
• Driving on sidewalks is punishable by a 200 GEL fine, and the offender will also receive a 30-point deduction from the driver’s license.
• The changes introduce a new prohibitory sign: “No stopping near a fire hydrant.” Violation of this rule will result in a 200 GEL fine, and the vehicle may also be towed to an impound lot.
Rules for driving in BUS LANE areas have also been updated, specifically: 👇
• Driving in a BUS LANE will now result in a 100 GEL fine and a 15-point deduction from the driver’s license; repeat violations will result in a 150 GEL fine and a 30-point deduction.
• Driving, stopping, or parking in a BUS LANE against the direction of traffic will result in a 200 GEL fine and a 20-point deduction; repeat violations will result in a 300 GEL fine and a 30-point deduction from the driver’s license,” the statement said.
