Tamar Ioseliani: the restoration of passenger railway service between Baku and Tbilisi will contribute to the country’s economic development and tourism

After a six-year pause, the first passenger train on the Baku–Tbilisi railway line was launched on Georgia’s Independence Day. The train was welcomed at Tbilisi Central Station by Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Tamar Ioseliani and the Director General of Georgian Railway, Lasha Abashidze.

Among the first passengers was Javid Gurbanov, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport of Azerbaijan.

According to Tamar Ioseliani, the decision to restore passenger railway service between the two countries was made during the Georgian Prime Minister’s visit to Baku.

“Today is an extremely important holiday for our country. Freedom is the greatest achievement, and it is the duty of each of us to protect it. Therefore, today is truly a historic day: after a six-year pause, the Baku–Tbilisi train has operated for the first time. Starting from May 26, the trains will run daily, giving our citizens, Azerbaijani guests, and tourists the opportunity to travel comfortably. This is a very important decision that will contribute both to the country’s economic development and the stimulation of tourism, as well as to strengthening ties between our peoples,” the deputy minister noted.

Trains on the new route will operate daily.
